It's interesting - our most important work today requires interaction with others, yet we spend very little time helping our people improve how they interact with others. How many times have you seen long debates, finger-pointing and passive aggressive behavior get in the way of timely and efficient execution? It happens all the time. If unresolved issues get a chance to fester, they most certainly will have a significant negative impact on business results.

So why do we let this happen?
Well, it's often uncomfortable and difficult to help people resolve conflict and relationship issues. Maybe we try to talk to them one-on-one, and nothing changes. Other times it's not appropriate or productive for us to get involved because of our role, or maybe we don't want to jeopardize our relationship with them. It's also common to rationalize and downplay the importance of getting involved and forcing a resolution. We assume that smart people can rise above it and figure it out on their own, when in fact effective relationships is not about smarts. It's about building trust, mutual purpose, aligning values and priorities, great communication skills, patience, and a sense of being in it together.
